The Houston Historical Society was established in 2006 for the purpose of preserving and promoting Houston and Winston County's historic resources. The organization is a non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible.
The Houston Historical Society holds a quarterly meeting at 6 pm on the second Tuesday of March, June, September and December in the Fellowship Hall of the Houston Memorial United Methodist Church.
Currently the organization is working on the Houston Historic Jail Preservation Project. Plans are underway to preserve the log jail, Winston County's oldest public building. In addition to preserving the building, plans include development of grounds adjacent to the jail and presenting the history of the area. The Houston Historical Society is working in consultation with the Alabama Historical Commission on the project.
Membership in the Houston Historical Society is open to anyone interested in the preservation, protection, and promotion of history in this region of northwest Alabama.
